Better Hometown Program Commended for 10 Successful Years

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs and the Georgia Main Street Program recently honored the City of Dahlonega with a special certification marking its 10 years of participation in the Georgia Main Street/Better Hometown Program. The award was presented in a ceremony in Atlanta on January 25. The Department of Community Affairs' statement read, "The Dahlonega Better Hometown Program's overwhelming success is due to the City's perseverance in revitalizing downtown and preserving its historic character. As the Georgia Main Street Program celebrates its 30th Anniversary, we extend our gratitude and congratulations for your role in this exceptional effort."

STREETSCAPE and PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS PLANNED

Dahlonega is acquiring state and federal grant monies to repair, expand, and enhance downtowns streetscape. This project is intended to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, add to the historic character of the area, and stimulate local economic activity.  The first phase of projects are a partnership between the City of Dahlonega and North Georgia College & State University. A portion of the planned streetscape project will provide improved pedestrian linkage between the campus and the historic downtown center. The project will also connect the historic central business district with the city's entrance corridors to bring more residents and visitors downtown for shopping and recreation. The streetscape project will be designed to compliment downtown's historic character.  The project will encourage people to drive more slowly, and make downtown more pedestrian focused. The phase one project area begins at the Sunset Drive/West Main Street intersection (including Sunset), proceeding to eastward to the Public Square, then turning south onto South Chestatee Street and proceeding to Morrison Moore Parkway.

Design elements include lamp posts and fixture, sidewalk pavers, street trees, curb and gutter, benches, and crosswalks.

Design and engineering will occur in 2010, with construction anticipated in 2012.
